After a disaster, it is more than wise to inform us as soon as possible to speed up the compensation procedure and above all to avoid losing your rights. Indeed, there are deadlines to respect for the declaration of damage. These deadlines will vary according to the type of contract (home insurance contract, car and motorcycle insurance contract, etc.) and also according to the type of claim.
What are the deadlines for home insurance?
Once a loss has occurred at your home, you have a maximum period of time in which to report it to us. This period varies according to the nature of the loss, but it always runs from the day you become aware of the loss. This rule was introduced so as not to prejudice the rights of people who are not at home when the loss occurs. However, the rule does not apply to persons who are not at home at the time of the loss, you will have to prove your good faith by all means, which is usually quite difficult to do. Apart from that, the delay of your declaration will also be excused if it is due to a case of force majeure (a sudden hospitalization, a communication cut in case of storm...).
Depending on the nature of the loss suffered by your home, the deadlines for making the declaration will vary:
- If you have been the victim of a burglaryYou must report the loss within 24 hours of becoming aware of it;
- For damage caused by a natural or technological disasterThe time limit is 10 days after the publication of the ministerial decree or the presidential decree that recognizes the damage as such;
- For fire, explosion, damage or any other event provided for in the contractThe deadline is 3 days.
Time limits for reporting a car claim
You only have a few days to report a car accident to us and thus start the compensation procedure.
- If it is a car theft You must notify your insurer within 48 hours of becoming aware of the theft;
- In the case of a road accident, glass breakage or fire You have 1 day to make your declaration;
- In the case of a loss caused by a natural disaster You have 10 days from the date of publication of the decree or order that recognizes the disaster as such.
If these deadlines are not respected, the insurer may declare the lapse of the guarantees subscribed. In other words, you will no longer be able to benefit from your insurance coverage.
